kira, you have new information this hour? >> i do. neighbors tell me they believe a ten-year old girl died in a second story apartment fire. we have video from the fire. 911 received a call about 12:15 this morning, someone reporting the fire but first responders say the fire may have been burning for quite some time before anyone called for help. at one point in the fight the floor of the second story apartment collapsed. two firefighters fell through the floor to the first floor. i'm told they suffered minor injuries. they will be okay. a neighbor told us he was woken up by the fire and his neighbor, a mother, wags calling desperately for help. >> i heard like mommy, mommy, and then the house just went like boom like after i got my dogs out -- after i got my dog out. but pretty much what happened was the lead whose -- the young girl who died, who was ten years old, her mother knocked on our neighbor's door and our neighbor knocked on our door to alert us.

but pretty much the lead was mad because she couldn't get upstairs to her daughter. >> crews contained the fire in about two hours. they are still on scene investigating what ignited the fire. dozens of neighbors in adjoining apartments are displaced this morning. the red cross is here helping to provide them with shelter and food for the next couple days. reporting live in treasure island, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> kira, thank you. it's certainly been a strange 30 hours for things coming out of says. you have the giant astroid that came close to earth. the meteor that hit russia and just last night a meteor streaked through our sky. a lot of people saw it. >> reports are coming in from around the bay but mostly on the peninsula. a bright blue strike streaking across the western cy around 7:40 tonight. someone claiming to have recorded the meteor while driving down 280 posted this video on youtube.

another witness looked at the video and said it's what he saw as well. we caught up with people who saw it at ocean beach in san francisco. >> it looked like a big, like a flash of lightning. that's basically what it looked like. it was quick. i thought it happened twice. he only -- at least three times. >> we saw two lights like right over there. >> it shone over the whole bay. it was like insane. >> apparently there was another bright meteor seen in the sky. maybe not as bright as the one that was seen in russia. >> more people seem to be paying attention to the sky after a meteor slammed into russia today. it streaked across the siberian sky and smashed into the earth with the power of an atomic bomb, injuring more than 1,000 people, mostly from broken glass. n.a.s.a. said the meteor was about the size of a building and moving at 40,000 miles per hour. >> the recent occurrences is probably what makes it

interesting. it's definitely what has we up here. >> what do you know about astroids? >> i know they can be dangerous. >> meanwhile another astroid is passing very close to the earth. it's the closest any astroid has ever gotten to the earth. stargazers came out to get a glimpse of a fuzzy dot on a video screen. 17,000 miles seems like a long distance, but it's so close the earth that astronomers see hits gravity has the potential of pending it's path. >> astronomers say it's a wonderful coincidence. reporting from the space and science center in oakland, i'm allen wong, abc7 news. >> if you snapped a picture of last night's meteor, we would love to see it. just send it to us. u report at kgo-tv.com.

>> it's certainly unlikely that a meteor would ever hit your home, but if it did, are you covered by an insurance? michael finney got some answers. >> it is one of the things definitely covered under the homeowners policy. a lot of people doesn't realize it because it doesn't happen that often, but if it does, it would be covered. >> on insurance industry spokesman also said damage from the meteor concussion like we saw in russia would also be covered. other events likely covered under the homeowners insurance includes lightning strikes and falling satellites. after 8 days aboard the carnival cruiseship triumph. two northern california women are finally home this morning. julie and her mother flew into the oakland airport last night. her nine-year-old son missed her so much he literally took her off her feet. after the bear hug on the

ground, nine-year-old ricky also had a big hug for his grandmother, connie. despite the conditions aboard the ship, they said their travel group of five women did fine. julie said she even used skills she practiced with her son who wants to be an eagle scout. she tied square knots for their tent on the deck. >> we were working together. yeah, what you showed me, yes. >> it all came in handy? >> it all came in handdy tieing sheets together. >> once we realized the fire was out and it was going to be all right, it took longer than we thought to come home. >> julie and connie said this experience was not scared them from ever taking a cruise again, but they will study the next ship a little closer and make sure it's newer. abc7 news reporter sergio has more from oakland international airport. >> as julie and thousands of other passengers aboard the carnival triumph moved home, the trouble shipped was moved to a

repair dock in mobile, alabama. that's where investigation of the cruise ship will begin. for some even the journey home met with technical problems. a charter bus broke down en route to new orleans stranding passengers for more than an hour. pictures shot will illustrate the conditions aboard the the triumph as the ship went dark and five inches of sewer water collected? , collected in their cabin. they said the situation aboard the triumph was tough but tolerable and that included caring for some people who had kids aboard. >> i think the kids had fun. they were running around on the ship. the crew did a lot to play with the kids and have events for them. i don't think -- i think the parents of the children were probably more stressed than the children themselves. >> i was thankful we didn't have our kids with. >> definitely. >> they were aboard for a group surprise 40th birthday celebration for her sister. they praised the crew who tried to make the best of a bad situation.

>> another passenger aboard the carnival triumph of has already filed a federal lawsuit over who whole ordeal. i asked julie and connie what they think of taking legal action and they say, of course, conditions aboard the ship were bad, but they don't believe it's worth a lawsuit. in oakland, abc7 news. new this morning, seven teenagers were rushed to san jose hospitals last night after their large s.u.v. rolled in the city's terrace hill neighborhood. our media partner, san jose news, reports three of them had significant injuries. the crash happened shortly after 10:00. no other vehicles were involved. rescuers say there's no sign of alcohol being involved, but there were obvious signs the s.u.v. was speeding. a santa clara man is accused of threatening a state senator and he is now charged with ten felonies. everett did not enter a plea during his first court appearance yesterday.

earlier. good morning america will have much more on the developing story coming up at 7:00 a.m. >> former illinois congressman jesse jackson jr. and his wife face potential prison terms after they agreed to plead guilty to spending $27,000 in campaign funds on themselves. they bought furs, a gold watch and a hat once owned by michael jackson. it's not clear how much prison time they can serve when they are sentenced in a few months. legal experts predict jackson jr. would likely serve at least a few years as breach of a public trust while his wife could serve maybe only a few months for filing a false tax return. the marin county sheriff's department is buying an armored vehicle to use in response to everything from terrorism to snipers. this is the truck in question. it's a bearcat ge res stew vehicle. it can be stand explosions from things like roadside bomb. it comes with a $370,000 price tag.

welcome back, everyone. it's 6:18. it is shaping up to be a nice one. >> we have cooler temperatures and return to the rain but we also have mild weather for today. as we head outside in the sierra nevada, some folks making plans to head up to the mountains. they call it ski week for some folks around the bay. a little new snow for parts of the sierra nevada in the upcoming days. but today really mild. right now 18 in truckee. 6:58 the official sunrise, setting at 5:50. we haven't had any snow here in a little bit. we saw some last week. but overall the snowpack continues to decline and back home we are looking at some higher clouds and some low clouds, stratus we call it. live doppler 7hd, partly cloudy conditions around the bay. we are looking at mild conditions except if you are at our coast where we are 13 degrees cooler this morning. so we've got on shor winds and there will be a little cooling here and there.

overall very mild this morning san francisco. 54 average highs. just in the upper 50s to near 60 this time of year. we will surpass that. numbers drop into the upper 30s in spots with cooler numbers. and mild conditions around mountain view at 46. 39 in gilroy, 49 in salinas. how about 59 in monterey. this morning some areas of warmer up in santa rosa, but we talked about those on shore winds. they are bogey to play a key element in our cool down for tomorrow. and then by monday we've got low pressure that is headed towards the bay area, bringing much cooler conditions. so mild to warm again today. more 60s and 70s. the cooling trend starts really tomorrow across the bay with numbers dropping back into the upper 50s at our coast. a chance rain arrives overnight on monday and tuesday, wow, highs will just be in the 50s with light rain and low snow levels entering the bay. so our pacific satellite picture remains pretty much unchanged except we have a weak cold front to the north and west of us.

this will allow for the on shore winds to return. it begins to nudge this ridge of high pressure to the east of us. and as that happens, with he get that wind shift and this allows for maybe a few high clouds today. this really isn't going to do much to change our sky cover. we still see mostly sunny conditions but then we are looking at an area of low pressure, a pretty chilly area of low pressure that begins to head our way, bringing anywhere from a half to a third of an inch of rain across the bay come tuesday. so starting out in the teens and low 50s today for the northern sierra. how about 60 yosemite with mid-60s at our coast. we had 80 yesterday around santa cruz. 79 los angeles. still really warm here with mid-60s in vegas. and bringing you back home, 67 downtown today. but if you are spending anytime in stinson, ocean beach, we will be a little cooler but still a brilliant afternoon there. 69 concord, 70 san jose. down by the monterey bay, we talked about that 80 yesterday. cooler, but still very, very nice. 72 in gilroy, hollister and 67

county and state officials made a deal with a nonprofit group to expand hours at china camp, the tomalus bay and the other state parks. the park will now see expanded hours. >> a year ago the partnership was formed to raise matching funds to keep china camp from being closed completely. the effort grew in size to allow today's announcement that all three parks will be operated through the partnership. the marin state park association took advantage of a newly passed law that put a freeze on closers after the discovery of more than $50 million the state parks department had in hidden accounts. they will celebrate a new agreement with the national park service that will deep samuel taylor state park open. now to a home invasion robbery with a hatchet. it happened in an area of the city where that kind of crime is not expected. the story from abc7 news reporter thomas ramone. >> he let him in. there was no forced entry that we know of.

>> he said he's known the victim who lived in this house for more than 25 years. >> he's had encounters with other houseguests who have threatened and hurt him. so this is not -- this is not an isolated incident. >> san francisco police are calling the incident that happened at 10:30 thursday night a home invasion robbery. police say three men broke into the house and attacked the 69-year-old resident while he slept with a hatchet, then attacked his roommate. >> the victim was brutally attacked in his own place by these suspects. the victim had no time to react and just did his best to defend himself. as you can imagine, the second victim coming home and walking into a home invasion in progress was also viciously attacked. >> reasons for the attack differed from the police reports what neighbors have experienced having in the home in the past. this troubles tom who lives a few houses down from the victim. he said the neighborhood is closely guarded by residents.

>> i'm stunned more than anything. you don't anticipate that this would ever happen on our block. i don't know what really to make of it because it just seems so out of the ordinary. >> san francisco police have not released the names of the two victims. they do say, however, they were hospitalized with nonlife-threatening wounds and police are asking anyone with information to police giver them a call. abc7 news. two armed robbers are on the lose in hayward. police in hayward say a man trying to sell his car through craig's list was tied up in his home and robbed at gunpoint friday. our media partner, the contra costa times, reports the victim called police to report what happened at his apartment complex in the 200 block of carlos b boulevard after he freed himself. the man told police he met two men in the arcing lot to discuss selling his vehicle but the armed men then followed him into the apartment, tied him up and robbed him. they did not take the car. new details about the death of the ex-cop christopher dorner.

investigators now believe he shot himself in the head. he have tied tuesday in the san bernardino mountains. the family who owned the cabin saw it yesterday. he held jim and carroll hostage on tuesday when they showed up to clean the cabin. the sheriff's department is defending deputies from criticism dorner hid out right under their noses. >> he left the door unlocked so a maintenance man could come in and check the residents and work on it. it appears at that point christopher dorner had already entered that residence and locked the door behind him. our deputies knocked on that door and did not get an answer. in hindsight, it's probably a good thing that he did not answer based on his actions before and after that event. an autopsy will determine dorner's official cause of death. authorities say they recovered silencers and assault weapons from dorner at sites connected to him. the state of california has spent hundreds of millions of

dollars to overhaul it's aging computer infrastructure, but now a third state agency is baling on that overhaul because it doesn't work. this time it's the dmv. abc7 news capital correspondent nannette miranda has the story from sacramento. >> the $200 million effort to overall dmv's 40-year-old computer system that processes drivers licenses and vehicle registrations has been halted. after seven years and 135 million taxpayer dollars only the driver's license portion is close to to getting done. >> we thought it was a time to bring the project to an end because they weren't going to get to an agreement on how to finish it out. >> the stalled dmv project is the latest in the string of high- profile blunders of that plagued state government. last week comptroller john chung fire the contractor charged with the $400 million upgrade to the

safe payroll system because it's years behind schedule, triple the original estimate and it doesn't work. last year after doling out half a billion dollars the courts pulled the plug on the effort to electronically connect every courthouse in the state when the cost ballooned to $2 billion. >> it's ironic that california being the birthplace of the high-tech industry can't seem to get its act together. >> but the state's technology chief said they do have some successes. california is the first state to have a mobile app store. an online voter registration system kicked off last fall and family and friends can make online reservations to visit an inmate. carlos admits the state may be too big for certain projects. >> technology projects in and of themselves can be pretty complex undertakings, but when you take on something of the scope and scale of california, they are inherently risky. >> state department heads don't make projects easy either. >> what we've heard from some of the people in the private sector is that the state will ask for something, but then they will change their minds later or they aren't clear as to what they

numbers have dropped at the beaches. overall today the last of the mild temperatures above average today. so plenty of 60s and 70s to enjoy today, but things are changing quickly. in fact, tomorrow temperatures are coming down significantly in parts of the bay. rain returns late on president's day. here's a look at live doppler 7hd right now. picking up some of the higher clouds around the bay. we will have a few of these. but still plenty of sunshine. right now it is quite mild in san francisco. 54. in morning, livermore. 40 for you with a cool 48 in fair feel. upper 40s for santa cruz and 59 monterey. yesterday you were 80 and a chili 39 in gilroy. all around the bay we are pretty much the same except for the coast. 13 degrees cooler half moon bay. warmer in the north bay. today will be just spectacular afternoon out there. but it's been getting a little strange, hasn't it? feeling like spring out there.

still the middle of february. president's day where we should have a lot of skiing and winter like conditions, some of that will be returning. mild and warm today. cooling trend starts around bait tomorrow with a chance of rain by late president's day and tuesday we are talking well below normal afternoon highs. here's a look at our setup right now. there's a system, a weak one offshore. high pressure still firmly in control with a big ridge over the bay area. this is beginning to shift east. as it does, it will allow for a wind shift, a few high clouds moving into the bay. we have them right now. but by the afternoon, still plenty warm out there. but here's what happens by monday night into tuesday. lake county, we will begin to see some rain. low snow levels, around 2500 feet. high temperatures are pressed to reach the mid-50s. here's a look at the timeline. in president's day we will increase the clouds. by noontime clouds around, highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s. then by monday night into tuesday, here it is. haven't seen this in a while.

we have light rain in the north bay. here's the low snow levels. and by the rest of the day tuesday the cold low gets closer to the coast, maybe some thunderstorms. snow in the mountains. today, though, teens starting out. 51 in the northern sierra. how about 60 in yosemite. fur headed to the mountains, just maybe even a t-shirt today but you will need the overcoat for the overnight hours and much cooler weather. skiing will definitely be favorable for the new snow on tuesday and, of course, they are always making snow there. the temperature are cold at night, getting colder throughout the day. 69 today for a high in oakland with livermore coming in at 69. 70 fremont, san jose, and down by the somebody ray bay still plenty nice and mild but cooler than yesterday. 73 in salinas and that trend continues with highs upper 60s to the mid-60s sunday. president's day, no rain until the overnight hours. warmer locations only 60 then look what happens. no 60s at all, cold rain
